Gardening as some of you may know is the practice of growing plants. You don’t exactly have to have a garden to be considered as one who is gardening. By simply growing unwanted weeds in your backyard you’re already considered a gardener. Not really, but hey that can be arranged. A gardener I presume is one who knows a lot about plants and practices gardening. That makes me not a gardener. But I do love plants. I think it makes my place look amazingly extravagant and eccentuates our surrounding. Not to mention I love lettuce which is still a plant. I’d say I even know a thing or two about the whole gardening thing. People I know would always say though, a hobby such as gardening is applicable or would only work for those who don’t have a job or have a lot of time to spend in their own homes or those mommies that stay at home and never work. I think otherwise. From how I see it even caring for just a single plant in a pot would make me a gardener. So long as I tend to it and make sure it gets its needs. Gardening doesn’t have to be all that of a complication. Simply cultivating the soil, watering the plant, giving it sunlight, proteecting it from pests would make me an effective gardener. I may sound like one who has his own garden but I dont really. I merely want to encourage people and start adopting a plant on their own. Who knows, you guys might even find gardening fun.

Plants are very delicate and they need utmost care through out the season. Water, sunlight, fertilizers and manure, everything should be given in proper proportions. But it is a fact that plants do not need as much care in winters as they need it in the summer season. The harsh sunrays during the summer season cause a lot of harm to the plants. In order to keep your plants healthy and glowing, you should water them in a systematic way. Watering plants in summer is essential but in winter season also it is of equal importance. Winters are generally dry and plants also tend to get dried up during this period. Plants often die due to dehydration in their cells. In some regions, due to normal winter precipitation their need for water is considerably less. But it is better to ensure that your plants are getting enough water to avoid dehydration. The procedures involved in watering plants and trees differ a lot. The requirement of water in plants is more than the established trees. Trees which are older should be watered after every 14 to 20 days depending on the age of the tree.

Here are some tips to water your plants during winter: -

Whenever you are watering your plants, do it thoroughly, in a uniform manner so that each one of the plants get equal amount of water. Pay attention to the newly planted saplings and shrubs. Try to do this every two to three weeks as plants remain inactive and do not need much water. But if the soil becomes dry then watering is necessary to save the plants from getting dehydrated.
Make sure that water does not get deposited on the plant’s stem and leaves when you are watering them. Water deposition on the plant foliage can result in decaying of the plant and cause it to break off.
Always try to mulch your garden with leaves and compost during the fall. It helps the plant in water retention, keeps the root warm, nourishes them as well as protects the topsoil.
If the region’s temperature goes below zero degree then do not forget to water your plants before the frosts as watering protect them from the damages caused by freezing. It should be done before 24 hours, so that the plants get a chance to absorb the water before it freezes.
Even after frosts, water your garden as it helps aerate the soil and warm the roots. Plants cannot preserve moisture when the soil is frozen, so watering during mid-day gives them a chance to absorb the moisture before the temperature dips.
Try to give special attention to the newly planted saplings as they are more prone to damage.

In case of young plants, it is recommended to use a soil needle when applying water. When using a soil needle, keep in mind the type of plant. A soil needle helps the plants to absorb water deeply. In case of young trees, it is advised to spread water in a zigzag manner so that every part of the tree gets equal water. After watering leave the needle for a minute per spot moving it to every six to eight inches. Whereas for established trees, sprinklers are more effective.
